Afghanistan: What Have We Done?

I wrote this piece almost a year ago.  Today we learn of this:

A brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai was assassinated on Tuesday at his home in Kandahar in a brazen attack that the Taliban quickly claimed credit for “as one of our biggest achievements” and which could destabilize a key region in U.S. efforts to fight the terror group.

Ahmed Wali Karzai, who was the powerful head of the Kandahar provincial council, had become a liability for his half brother, the Afghan president, amid allegations he was being paid by the CIA and was involved in drug trafficking. He repeatedly denied the charges and President Karzai defended him, but they’ve persisted as a sign of the corruption that reaches to the highest levels of the Afghan government.

I have written ten or so articles on Afghanistan detailing the waste of lives and our tax dollars. This story is about what unfettered checks and balances, given President Hamid Karzai, has wrought.  I wonder who is next to die?

Breaking New; 9/3/2010.There has been a run on the Bank of Kabul and Karzai’s brother is asking for the U.S to step in and help! Mahood says they can last maybe a few more days and then they are out of money! U.S. so far says they won’t help! If this bank goes down, it will effectively destroy the countries banking system and the confidence of the people. This will allow the Taliban to move back in and run the country. Since they honor our Labor Day banking holiday, the full extent of the run on the bank won’t be known until Tuesday.

If you recall Congresswoman Maxine Waters is in trouble for helping get TARP money for her husband’s bank. That is nothing compared to what routinely happens in Afghanistan, that you and I are helping pay for.

The Central Bank of Kabul just canned two top executives for Kabul Bank. Mahmood Karzai owns 7% of the bank and yes he is Hamid’s brother. No conflicts here right?

Kabul Bank holds about $1 billion in assets. They pay out all the Afghan soldiers, police and teachers. One run on the bank and the entire system collapses in on itself and destroys all credibility of the new government.

What happened?

On Monday someone looked at the books (something we should do to the Federal Reserve). Oops… that can’t be good. So far here is what has been discovered.

• Off-the-book loans by the chairman to himself and politically connected Afghans

• The loans total over $300 million dollars

• $150 million in luxury villas in Dubai the chairman bought for powerful people including Mahmood Karzai.

• Kabul Bank has been fingered in aiding the transfer of over $1 billion out of Afghanistan for drug barons, politicians and money transfer firms.

The U.S. Government has been concerned about the “alleged” fraud that permeates the Karzai Government. Here is the latest scandal that Katzai is now involved in. Keep in mind it has been our tax money that has propped him up and has led to his new found wealth and power.

But I guess I can’t blame him, when our own government is just as bad with all the stimulus money that has gone missing.

When Afghanistan, one of the poorest nations on earth, is handed democracy without checks and balances, and on our dime, is it any surprise those at the top own luxury condo’s in Dubai!

How to plunder your own country!

Our presence has created a super class of ruling Afghans that has figured out how to plunder their own country. Some have been accused of playing both sides with the Taliban.

With our economy in the tank, this kind of story really questions my resolve to want to help out Afghanistan. We free them from the Taliban, and then the folks running the country raid the treasury.

This war gives me a bad taste in my mouth and I question what we are trying to accomplish. Who is the enemy and how will we know if and when we win? My tax money is hard to come by, and these clowns in Afghanistan are buying luxury condos! Go figure.

We are in year ten and I have no idea what victory is supposed to look like and I follow Afghanistan on a regular basis. Somebody clue me in please!
